B3! ENGAGEMENT WITH SIBA: What's in it for you?

B3Online webinars, programs, and resources to help Build Better Booksellers

SIBA's B3! Building Better Booksellers program is all about creating connections, sharing knowledge, finding resources, and improving your business. Participation also earns points, and the more points accumulated, the greater the rewards. Members who are active enough can earn enough points to pay their dues, receive free meal tickets to the SIBA Discovery Show, and even free travel and hotel accommodations. Check out the many ways you can build points.

In 2018, SIBA's B3! Program expands with B3! Webinars and a B3! Book Club.

SIBA has decided to expand the potential of our "Wednesdays with Wanda" online office hours. We'll now be using some of that time to host webinars, discussions, and presentations of interest to booksellers.

Our B3! Webinars are designed to provide booksellers with more opportunities to improve different areas of their business. Webinars last for one hour and include Q & A time with the presenter. We encourage owners, managers, and frontline booksellers to attend. We always welcome your suggestions for future topics. Email Linda-Marie Barrett at to reserve your space. Here's our winter schedule:

Creating Community: Developing and Maintaining an Authors in Schools Program with Jamie Rogers Southern: Wednesday, January 10 at 2pm
- online webinar link | RSVP
Jamie Rogers Southern of Bookmarks will discuss how to develop an Authors in Schools program to increase your brand awareness with teachers, parents, and young readers in your community. An Authors in Schools program allows you to work with local and visiting authors who can give presentations, lead workshops, and otherwise speak about their books that tie in with ongoing curricula.

Inventory Activism with Kimberly Daniels and Erica Merrell: Wednesday, Feb 14 at 2pm
- online webinar link | RSVP
Join SIBA Board Members Erica Merrell of Wild Iris Books and Kimberly Daniels of The Country Bookshop as they explain how inventory can be a powerful force when serving customers. Come learn how to best fill this customer need, walk away with title recommendations, and share your success stories. Whether your customers are looking to make changes in social, environmental or local issues, find out how the activist mantra of thinking global, acting local can increase customer engagement and revenue for your store.

Flatiron Writers Room Pop-Up Writing Retreat

Hello booksellers and book readers,

Want to know a secret? We are creating a super-cool Book Club Journal for Bookstore Day 2018. And we need the help of our fellow booksellers and readers.

The Book Club Journal will have lists of recommended titles from famous authors (like, ahem, David Sedaris), and from booksellers across the country. That's where you come in.

Please send us your most fun, insightful, readable list of 10 titles you would recommend to a book club. Each list should have a theme. We want the expected: "American classics you lie about reading" and the surprising: "Great novels set in deserts." Feel free to include all genres as well as fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. Titles can be both familiar and esoteric.

Please send your themed lists to by December 1 for consideration*. Include your name, bookstore and city, and your favorite genre. Subject line should read BOOK LIST.

Thank you and please share this with your colleagues!

Yours in slinging books,

*We may not be able to use all the lists submitted. We reserve the right to edit or combine lists, but we will let you know if yours has been altered.

From the "Why didn't we think of that?" Department: SIBA's sister organization to the north, the New Atlantic Independent Booksellers Association (NAIBA) showcases member marketing kits

From Eileen Dengler, NAIBA Executive Director:

NAIBA region bookstores are amazing places, and I bet you only know a few of them. Our stores have posted their marketing kits on the NAIBA website so you can discover new places for your deep list of author events. Please check it out and take advantage of the opportunity to put authors in new markets.

Authors & Booksellers: Natural PartnersAt the North Carolina Writer's Network's 2017 fall conference, Nicki Leone gave a presentation called "Authors & Booksellers, Natural Partners" -- the goal of which was to talk to writers about the best way to approach bookstores (make an appointment, don't just show up!) and work with stores as partners, rather than adversaries.

Here's a link to the power point presentation

And here, if you can sit through it, is the presentation with the audio, including the audience questions. (the first minute or so is waiting for the session to get started)
