Meet the Bookseller: Serena Wyckoff and Cathy Graham, Copperfish Books

MEET THE BOOKSELLER

Serena and CathySerena Wyckoff and Cathy Graham, Copperfish Books, Punta Gorda, FL

Copperfish Books
103 W. Marion Ave., Punta Gorda FL 33950

website || facebook || twitter

Number of years as a bookseller:

12 (5.5 years in our brick-n-mortar store with new/used books, 6.5 years prior as used/antiquarian booksellers – mainly online and in antique malls)

Best part about being a bookseller?:

Constantly being around books and people who love books – stimulating, engaging, and fun! And there's nothing better than when folks come back to say they absolutely loved the books we put into their hands!

The Great BelieversWhat book(s) are you reading?:

Serena is reading The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai after having just finished White Houses by Amy Bloom. Cathy just finished Children of Blood and Bone, and is re-reading Twain and Stanley Enter Paradise (for book club).

Favorite handsell of 2017: A Gentleman in Moscow

Serena and CathyBest thing you did this year at your store: Hire our terrific new staff! We were a team of three the first few years… Now We Are Six . ☺

Social Media Stats (FB likes, Twitter followers, etc)
Facebook: 1641 likes
Twitter: 499 followers

Top priority going into 2018: To increase book sales and events during the slower months. We are located in what has traditionally been a seasonal retirement-focused community, with "snowbirds" swelling the local population from October to March. The area is now on the verge of explosive growth, to include more year-round residents and younger working people in the next few years. This offers us the opportunity to strengthen sales April to September, making the overall year more robust.

Serena and CathyFavorite SIBA programming benefit: The fall Discovery Show – and we're so excited that it's in Florida this year. We hope to bring our staff for the first time. The show give us a chance to re-connect with our colleagues (booksellers, publishers, authors) and learn about exciting upcoming releases, programs, and industry tips and practices. We always leave re-energized for the busy holiday/winter season!

Social Media and Content Marketing with Sarah Benoit

Posted By Nicki Leone, Wednesday, March 21, 2018

GREAT NEWS! SIBA is very pleased to announce a new self-guided course for booksellers on the art of using social media and content marketing:

Social Media and Content Marketing Basics for Booksellers: The Art of Increasing Reach and Engagement
with Sarah Benoit and the JB Media Institute.

April 16 - July 16

Sarah Benoit at EUREKAsibaSarah was one of the most popular presenters at both Winter Institute in Memphis and EUREKAsiba in Atlanta earlier this year. Not only did she receive enthusiastically positive feedback from attendees, she was pretty consistently mobbed by people with questions throughout the entire day in Atlanta and never once lost her smile or her enthusiasm. You'll note that there are two options for this course -- a "DIY" version for those of you who are comfortable taking online courses on your own, and the "Expert Support" version, which comes with live Q&As and access to "office hours" where you can talk to the instructors in person.

Social Media and Content Marketing Basics for BooksellersI do encourage you to sign up for the latter, if you can swing it. I am -- I am usually the kind of person that would work her way through an online course on her own. I think I've gone through half of lynda.com that way! But I signed up for the Expert Support option because I want to pick Sarah Benoit's brain. I always have questions! As we all know, nothing beats being able to talk to a real person in real time about your real questions!

Those of you who attended EUREKAsiba already know how helpful and enthusiastic Sarah can be. But if you didn't have a chance to attend, take a few minutes to watch the video of her EUREKAsiba talk.

Social media and content marketing can be stressful and confusing. Many booksellers need to know how to be more efficient and effective so the time and energy they spend marketing online has greater impact and creates results.

Join Sarah Benoit and the JB Media Institute to learn the basic best practices and strategies the professionals use to share stories, build community, and grow your business.

Topics covered include:

  • content branding
  • keyword research
  • content calendars
  • Instagram and Facebook tracking
  • social media tracking on Google Analytics
  • Facebook and Instagram advertising
  • event marketing
  • and more

How long you've been a bookseller: I've been a bookseller for 16 years. 10 years at Borders and 6 at Quail Ridge.

Best part about being a bookseller: . . .is the books! I get to buy and sell books for a living! And, of course, connecting with people through books.

Sadness is a White Bird Frankenstein in BaghdadThe Mars RoomThe Sea Beast Takes a Lover

Tony's Staff FavoritesBooks I'm reading:
I just finished Sadness is a White Bird by Moriel Rothman-Zecher. Almost finished The Sea Beast Takes a Lover by Michael Andreasen. In the middle of Frankenstein in Baghdad by Ahmed Saadawi. And just started The Mars Room by Rachel Kushner.

They are all wonderful and completely different from each other.

So beautiful and beautifully written, devastatingly sad, but in a way that reminds you that you're alive.

Social Media Handles: I'm not on social media. I did Twitter for about 6 months, but made myself delete it.

Best thing we did this year at the store:
I'd have to say, the amazing people we hired this year. We have a wonderful staff, but this year in particular we added some incredible people with great experience in and out of bookselling

Top priority for 2018: Get the word out. Get all these amazing books in people's hands and brains.

And get people to realize that if they don't buy from us, we won't be around forever. Don't take your independent bookstore for granted.

Favorite SIBA programming benefit:
SIBA gave scholarships to two of our staff to go to New Orleans, which they raved about. I'd love to learn more about what SIBA does.

A non-golfer at the Valspar Championship. AKA, The Site Visit

Posted By Nicki Leone, Tuesday, March 13, 2018

Innisbrook ResortWhen Wanda Jewell told me that our annual site visit to the Innisbrook Resort in preparation for upcoming Discovery Show in September would be in March, she did warn me. "It will be during Valspar" she cautioned. I must have looked blank, because she added "the golf tournament." I shrugged and nodded. It was Florida. There would be golf, I thought.

Tiger Woods on the last day at ValsparIt wasn't until we hit the traffic on US 19 and found ourselves behind a row of coach buses that I realized, oh it's a GOLF TOURNAMENT. So my first introduction to the Innisbrook Resort was one of confused, milling excitement. Golf cart taxis and trams were zipping to and fro. Lines of people wearing sun visors and carrying beach bags and sun block stood at security check points, waiting to be, uh, wanded. Someone had created an exhibit of Tiny Houses near the walkway that led down to the 15th hole. Boy are they tiny. I think I'd need about six just for my books. Adults were walking around with martinis and mojitos in plastic cups. Kids were running around wearing straw hats and grasping paper fans stapled to wooden popsicle sticks.

I'm not a huge golf fan, but I still immediately called my dad. "Guess where I am!" I gloated.

Normally, a site visit means seeing the space "in action" on a normal day. This was hardly normal. Tiger Woods was on the premises, playing like he hadn't for the last five years. The enthusiasm was infectious. And oddly enough, I think being on site during a major event like Valspar was useful because we got a sort of "sky's the limit" view of the possibilities, and we got to see the resort staff really rise to every occasion.

So what do we have to look forward to in September?

Copperhead CourseWell, the place is beautiful.

That was abundantly clear despite the lines and the traffic and the security details. There are many lovely places to walk and it was not lost on me that the ospreys were nesting and not at all bothered by the crowds. I usually spend the week of the Discovery Show all but trapped in a hotel, so having so much open green space around me was addictive.

exhibit hall foyerThe exhibit hall is beautiful.

The foyer has a skylight the length of the building making it bright and welcoming. I think we're going to be putting the TRIO exhibit there. For exhibitors, loading in and out is going to be a dream. The loading docks are RIGHT THERE, and yet somehow invisible. No contending with creaky hotel elevators.

suiteThe rooms are really, really comfortable.

At Innisbrook, you have the choice between a "deluxe guestroom" and 1- and 2-bedroom suites. And I will say right now it is worth it to upgrade to the suite if you can. If you share with another person, or a couple people, they are less expensive per person than the guestroom, so this is the Discovery Show where you bring along family for a little vacation. And the suites come with a full kitchen: Fridge, stove, the works. When I come in September, I'm bringing my own coffee maker. No more trying to live off those little coffee pods hotels all have now!

There are something like five restaurants, three bars, a spa, and four or five pools on site.

Which is fortunate, because one thing about Innisbrook is that it is its own contained little world. Getting offsite takes some effort, and I am guessing most folks when they get there, are going to want to stay there. And speaking of food: It is, of course, very good. The menus are heavy on the seafood, naturally. So if you have special dietary concerns, be sure to let SIBA know when you register.

It looks like things are farther away than they really are.

It took me a little while to get used to the idea that all the program events would be a different building from where I was sleeping. Just out of curiosity, I tried to see how long it would take me to walk from my room to the exhibit hall, the building farthest away from where we were staying. At an amble it took me twelve minutes. With the tram service, it will take less time than an elevator ride. In fact, the hotel liaison told us they actually test their tram schedules against elevators in other hotels to make sure they have their times beat. "Think of the trams like a horizontal elevator" she said. Horizontal elevators with sunshine and fresh air!

So why are you still reading? Go register for #SIBA18 now!
