She then turned to trade book publishing, serving as publicist for August House Publishers in Arkansas and vice president of sales and marketing for John F. Blair, Publisher in Winston-Salem, N.C.

After ten years with Blair, she purchased, revitalized and managed the Green Goat Gallery in Salisbury, N.C., a regional art and craft gallery. She also founded and operated the Blue Ewe Yoga Studio in Salisbury.

Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi (who worked on this fabulous debut novel while a HCWP's writers-in-residence last year), All the Ugly and Wonderful Things by Bryn Greeenwood (I am embarrassed by how much I enjoyed this book), Varina by Charles Frazier (just started), and Malagash by Joey Comeau, published by Canada's wonderful ECW Press (on the horizon). 

Favorite handsell of 2017:
Milk & Honey by Rupi Kaur because this collection sings to the blossoming poet in all of us. We've sold 56 and counting . 

Best thing you did this year at your store:
Promoted our bookseller Leena Dbouk to assistant manager/events coordinator.

Top priority going into 2018:
Make Hub City Bookshop a destination bookstore for readers and writers!

Favorite SIBA programming benefit:
The SIBA Discovery Show, which I first attended as a newbie publicist for August House Publishers in 1993. It is still a grand place to discover wonderful books and sidelines, mingle with authors, make new friends and catch up with old ones.
 


OkraWINTER OKRA PICKS

A bumper crop!

The first thing booksellers will notice about the 2018 Okra Picks is that it is a loooong list. Eighteen titles instead of the usual twelve or thirteen. Thats because with the advent of the new "Send to SIBA" option on Edelweiss, SIBA received almost three times as many nominations for Okra Picks as it has in the past. Watch for your Okra Box mailing in early January.

Christmas shopping trends, Online website sales up: News you can use from the Land of SIBA

AVERAGE SALES ONLINE AT INDIECOMMERCE SITES UP 31%

Sales data collected by Google Analytics for November 2017 showed that aggregate online sales for IndieCommerce sites were up 31 percent compared to the same period in 2016.
IndieCommerce sites also experienced dramatic increases in the average conversion rate, which increased by more than 22 percent over November 2016. The average value of an online order placed during this period also increased from $46 to $49.09.

The Google data also indicates that there was substantial growth in the online sale of signed books and prepaid tickets for store-sponsored events.

A Tallahassee native, Annie began living her Kathleen Kelly-dream in 2013, when she took over operations of The Bookshelf in Thomasville, Georgia. The moments when I connect with a customer on a book we both read and loved. Those conversations are like mini-book club meetings, and they're my favorite thing. 

What book(s) are you reading?:
I'm always drowning in ARCs, so right now I'm reading The Queen of Hearts, a debut novel releasing mid-February. (Jury's still out, but I like what I've read thus far.) I try to read one fiction and one non-fiction at a time, so I'm also reading David Leibovitz's L'Appart, which is perfect to pick up and put down during this hectic season. 

Favorite handsell of 2017:
Do I have to pick just one? Probably Young Jane Young, but I also loved selling Rabbit Cake and Little Fires Everywhere this year. 

The Bookshelf InteriorBest thing you did this year at your store:
We're in an off-the-beaten-path location, and it can be tough to get authors to come to our small town, so for Small Business Saturday, we invited other entrepreneurs to come do pop-up shops in our store. We wanted to celebrate small businesses we loved, and it wound up being such a great day. We hosted our local kids' craft studio, which meant 5-year-old entrepreneurs got to sell their handmade goods in our bookstore, and an 11-year-old author signed copies of her self-published book. (We were basically all in tears watching the joy on their faces.) To top it all off, we did a live recording of our store podcast in partnership with The Popcast, a pop culture podcast we're big fans of. It was a jam-packed day, but everything went swimmingly, and we got to partner with so many people we loved. It was perfect.

Top priority going into 2018:
I'd love to see us maintain and sustain our growth. So much of 2017 was experimenting and seeing what worked, which was great, but also exhausting. I want to keep doing the things we do well, and if possible, eliminate the excess for my own well-being and the well-being of my staff.

Favorite SIBA programming benefit:
SIBA has introduced me to fellow booksellers I wouldn't have met otherwise, and those connections have allowed me to create a network of people I trust with my business. As someone still relatively new to the whole bookselling enterprise, some of SIBA's educational courses and seminars have also been really helpful.

'Twas the week before (and after) Christmas, when shoppers went nuts.

Would it surprise you to hear that we see 34% more shopping searches on Christmas Day than on Black Friday? That's just one of the eye-opening consumer trends we're watching closely now that the 2017 holiday season is in full swing. With mobile, shoppers know they can easily find and get what they're looking for up until the last minute. So despite all of the improvements retailers have made to shipping speed and product availability, many people still wait to buy. That means that a lot of December's holiday shopping happens right before—and even after—Christmas, giving more reason for retailers to continue to drive store traffic from online and offline media throughout the Christmas shopping season..

MEET THE BOOKSELLER!

Mary Ruthless, Foggy Pines Books, Boone, NC

Mary RuthlessName: Mary Ruthless—Born and raised in the mountains of western North Carolina, I was always an avid reader. I taught myself to read at age 3 because I was too impatient to wait for someone else to read me a story. I was never without a book growing up and my love for reading only grew with each book I read. I received my BA in English Literature from Appalachian State University in 2011 and went on to manage the small bookstore that was in town at the time. When the owner decided to move on and focus on her own writing, I bought it and turned it into Foggy Pine Books. I have a 10 year old son, Liam, who also harbors a deep love of books; 2 dogs, Anya and Athena; and a cat, Smoke.

Number of years as a bookseller: 4 1/2 years—3 at Black Bear Books after college, 1 1/2 at Foggy Pine Books 

inside Foggy PineBest part about being a bookseller?: This is such a tough question because I love everything about being a bookseller—from reading new books to putting them in the hands of excited readers. My favorite part, however, is being able to talk about literature all day long. I love engaging with my customers, making recommendations, and learning about new authors from others. I get stopped all the time around (our very small) town because someone recognized me as "the book lady" and just had to tell me about the book they're reading or to ask me about a title in the store. It's humbling and exciting to know that those little conversations about books that I love so much also matter to the people having them with me. 

What book(s) are you reading?: Future Home of The Living God by Louise Erdrich, The City of Brass by S. A. Chakraborty, A Gathering of Shadowsby V. E. Schwab, Illuminae by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff, The Heart Forger by Rin Chupeco 

The Bear and the NightingaleFavorite handsell of 2017: The Bear & The Nightingale by Katherine Arden — brilliant and beautiful novel set in medieval Russia with excellent characters and plenty of fairy tale-type magic. 

Best thing you did this year at your store: I did a lot of great things this year (wink wink) but I think the best decision I made was to switch my bestseller display from the NYT bestsellers to the Southern bestsellers. My customers engage with the display much more and many of the "Southern Only" titles really catch their eye. It has boosted my bestseller sales and gives my customers a sense of place as soon as they step in the door. 

 

Foggy Pine Books new location 

Top priority going into 2018: My top priority for 2018 is to establish the store in our new location which includes: customer retention, community visibility, expansion of titles offered, and hiring new employees. We're looking to open in the new space by mid-January and it's definitely the most important thing on my to-do list right now. 

Favorite SIBA programming benefit: Other than the annual trade show (because it's the most obvious answer), the Okra Picks are hands-down my favorite benefit. I look forward to the bookmarks/cards that come in the mail with each new batch and I love arranging the new Okra Pick display, writing shelf talkers, and hand selling them to my customers. Then, I get to start in on another round of reading great Southern literature so I can nominate the next Okra Picks. 


CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR 2018 PW AWARDS

for Bookstore and Sales Rep of the Year

PWPublishers Weekly seeks nominations for the 2018 Bookstore of the Year and Sales Representative of the Year Awards. The winning independent bookstore and sales representative will be featured in an upcoming issue of Publishers Weekly magazine and honored in a ceremony to be held in New York City in spring 2018.

Finalists for both awards will be named in January at Winter Institute 13 in Memphis, Tenn.

Authors, booksellers, publishers, distributors, and others with ties to the book industry are invited to nominate their favorite bookstores and sales representatives for the PW Bookstore of the Year and PW Sales Rep of the Year Awards. (Please note that candidates cannot nominate themselves, nor can family members nominate them.)

Please email nominations by January 8, 2018 to: Judith Rosen at PWawards@publishersweekly.com. No nominations or letters of recommendation will be accepted after that date.

Criteria for the awards:

PW 2018 Bookstore of the Year:
Publishers Weekly will honor an independently owned bricks-and-mortar bookstore in the U.S., which has been in operation for at least four years. In your nomination, please note what makes the bookstore special and to provide contact information, including your name and industry affiliation. This letter will be read by the judges to help determine which bookstore wins the 2018 award. Bookstores that have previously received the award cannot be nominated, nor can sister stores of past winners.

PW 2018 Sales Rep of the Year: We welcome nominations for outstanding telephone and house reps as well as independent sales representatives. Please include an example of the rep's commitment to excellence, as well as contact information, including your name and industry affiliation. This letter will be read by the judges to help determine which sales representative wins the 2018 award. Sales representatives can only win the award once.


BRILLIANT BOOKSELLER OF THE WEEK:

Importing Book-Giving Traditions from Other Countries and giving it a personal twist.

Meet the bookseller: Mary Ruthless of Foggy Pine Books in Boone, NC

Mary Ruthless Name: Mary Ruthless—Born and raised in the mountains of western North Carolina, I was always an avid reader. I taught myself to read at age 3 because I was too impatient to wait for someone else to read me a story. I was never without a book growing up and my love for reading only grew with each book I read. I received my BA in English Literature from Appalachian State University in 2011 and went on to manage the small bookstore that was in town at the time. When the owner decided to move on and focus on her own writing, I bought it and turned it into Foggy Pine Books. I have a 10 year old son, Liam, who also harbors a deep love of books; 2 dogs, Anya and Athena; and a cat, Smoke.

Number of years as a bookseller: 4 1/2 years—3 at Black Bear Books after college, 1 1/2 at Foggy Pine Books 

inside Foggy PineBest part about being a bookseller?: This is such a tough question because I love everything about being a bookseller—from reading new books to putting them in the hands of excited readers. My favorite part, however, is being able to talk about literature all day long. I love engaging with my customers, making recommendations, and learning about new authors from others. I get stopped all the time around (our very small) town because someone recognized me as "the book lady" and just had to tell me about the book they're reading or to ask me about a title in the store. It's humbling and exciting to know that those little conversations about books that I love so much also matter to the people having them with me. 

What book(s) are you reading?: Future Home of The Living God by Louise Erdrich, The City of Brass by S. A. Chakraborty, A Gathering of Shadows by V. E. Schwab, Illuminae by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff, The Heart Forger by Rin Chupeco 

The Bear and the NightingaleFavorite handsell of 2017: The Bear & The Nightingale by Katherine Arden — brilliant and beautiful novel set in medieval Russia with excellent characters and plenty of fairy tale-type magic. 

Best thing you did this year at your store: I did a lot of great things this year (wink wink) but I think the best decision I made was to switch my bestseller display from the NYT bestsellers to the Southern bestsellers. My customers engage with the display much more and many of the "Southern Only" titles really catch their eye. It has boosted my bestseller sales and gives my customers a sense of place as soon as they step in the door. 

Foggy Pine Books new location 

Top priority going into 2018: My top priority for 2018 is to establish the store in our new location which includes: customer retention, community visibility, expansion of titles offered, and hiring new employees. We're looking to open in the new space by mid-January and it's definitely the most important thing on my to-do list right now. 

Favorite SIBA programming benefit: Other than the annual trade show (because it's the most obvious answer), the Okra Picks are hands-down my favorite benefit. I look forward to the bookmarks/cards that come in the mail with each new batch and I love arranging the new Okra Pick display, writing shelf talkers, and hand selling them to my customers. Then, I get to start in on another round of reading great Southern literature so I can nominate the next Okra Picks.

December 1st is the deadline to nominate books for the 2018 Winter Okra Picks. This is for books that will be published between January 1 and March 31. Nominated titles must be Southern in nature, or by a Southern author, or both. Nominate here

Those of you who post reviews to SIBA via Edelweiss+ --and thank you for that! We're receiving 5-10 new reviews every week! -- don't have to worry about re-submitting them as Okra nominations. We include all eligible titles in the nominations list.

STORE HOLIDAY CATALOGS

OctaviaWe're starting to see the Holiday Catalog on SIBA store websites! If you have taken the catalog this year and still need to get the online version onto your site, contact nicki@sibaweb.com. City Lights

SIBA's support of the catalog began last week, with the first installment of the "Lady Banks Gift Guide" in the Lady Banks newsletter. From now through the end of the year, we'll be promoting a selection of catalog titles in the newsletter, linked back to a SIBA member store for purchasing.

Starting December 1, the ARTS Facebook page will be promoting the catalog titles as well, and linking back to the Holiday Catalog and Gift Guide on authorsroundthesouth.com. The books on that page click through to SIBA member stores, so for the entire month of December we'll be driving our social media followers to your store websites for the books in the catalog.

Has the Indies First Sweepstakes Begun Without YOU?

In celebration of Indies First on Small Business Saturday, beginning today, shoppers at indie bookstores can enter the American Booksellers Association's new #shopindiesfirstsweepstakes for a chance to win $1,000 worth of books from Penguin Random House.

Between Wednesday, November 15, and Sunday, November 26, customers can enter the sweepstakes by posting a message on Twitter or Instagram and using the hashtag #shopindiesfirstsweepstakes along with the location tag, the social media handle, or the name, city, and state of a U.S. independent bookstore.

A random drawing will be held on Friday, December 15, to select five lucky grand prize winners, who will win $1,000 worth of books. Each bookstore with a winning customer will also win $1,000 worth of books to donate to a local nonprofit of their choice.  More details here

UNDISCOVERED TREASURES: ARTS CALENDAR EVENT BATCH ENTRY WORKSHEETS

"Why aren't my store's events on the calendar?"

SIBA publishes the event calendars of our member stores in the Lady Banks Newsletter, and sends out state-specific calendar listings to all our Lady Banks subscribers. So it isn't uncommon for a store to see the list of upcoming author readings, book club meetings, tarot card sessions (really! you know who you are!) and wonder "why aren't our events listed?"

Events appear on the calendar one of two ways:

  1. SIBA elves put them there
  2. Stores upload their own events

Of course, there are only so many elves. And this time of year they get farmed out to Santa. So the most reliable way to ensure your store events are listed is to upload them yourself. Plus you now earn 5 B3! points for every event you add. Here's how to do it:

Add a single event | Add multiple events (Excel File) | Add multiple events online (Google Docs)

It takes about one business day for uploaded events to appear on the calendar.

SIBA's B3! Building Better Booksellers program is all about creating connections, sharing knowledge, finding resources, and improving your business. Participation also earns points, and the more points accumulated, the greater the rewards. SIBA has decided to expand the potential of our "Wednesdays with Wanda" online office hours. We'll now be using some of that time to host webinars, discussions, and presentations of interest to booksellers.

Our B3! Webinars are designed to provide booksellers with more opportunities to improve different areas of their business. Webinars last for one hour and include Q & A time with the presenter. Want to know a secret? We are creating a super-cool Book Club Journal for Bookstore Day 2018. And we need the help of our fellow booksellers and readers.

The Book Club Journal will have lists of recommended titles from famous authors (like, ahem, David Sedaris), and from booksellers across the country. That's where you come in.

Please send us your most fun, insightful, readable list of 10 titles you would recommend to a book club. Each list should have a theme. We want the expected: "American classics you lie about reading" and the surprising: "Great novels set in deserts." Feel free to include all genres as well as fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. Titles can be both familiar and esoteric.

Please send your themed lists to schoech70@mac.com by December 1 for consideration*. Include your name, bookstore and city, and your favorite genre. Subject line should read BOOK LIST.

TRIO & OKRA PICKS & BOOK SALES SALES SALES

TRIO: We ran a BookLab at City Lights in Sylva, NC with the final showing of TRIO 2017.  SIBA covered a one hour staff meeting with Shari Smith where all of City Lights staff experience the exhibit for themselves and were prepared in the selling of the titles and the sharing of the exhibit with customers.  Chris Wilcox of City Lights was delighted to report the store sold nearly 40 copies of TRIO titles in the month of August when TRIO was up in the store. 

Okra: Fiction Addiction in Greenville, SC, and Bookmarks in Winston-Salem, NC are the first two stores to sell over 100 Okra Pick titles in the three month window selling across all of the Okra titles but for two.  Congratulations to these stores.  Here's a picture of Fiction Addiction's display:

HOLIDAY CATALOG UPDATES

holiday catalogWeb-versions, resources, and special offers are now available

The Web-versions of the SIBA holiday catalog is now available to stores to post on their websites. We think they look very nice! See a demo version

  • Store with Indiecommerce Sites:
    The American Booksellers Association will have the catalog available for stores to add to their sites shortly.
  • Stores with other ecommerce options:
    SIBA can provide a customized file with your store ecommerce links. Email nicki@sibaweb.com
  • Stores without ecommerce:
    We have a "no links" version of the catalog you can link to here.

You earn 5 B3! points for posting the holiday catalog on your site.

What SIBA is doing to help:
The catalog will be promoted at AuthorsRoundtheSouth.com (ARTS) starting the week of Thanksgiving. Stores with active ecommerce will rotate as the click through destination for each of the books. The catalog titles are also featured in the Lady Banks newsletter as a "gift guide" and the gift guide itself is featured between Thanksgiving and the New Year on the ARTS Facebook page and on the Lady Banks Bookshelf. In short, SIBA will be making a concerted effort to drive traffic to the websites of stores that ordered the catalog.

Designed to provide booksellers with more opportunities to improve different areas of their business. Our webinars last for one hour and include Q & A time with the presenter. Creating Community: Developing and Maintaining an Authors in Schools Program with Jamie Rogers Southern: Wednesday, January 10 at 2pm

Jamie Rogers Southern of Bookmarks will discuss how to develop an Authors in Schools program to increase your brand awareness with teachers, parents, and young readers in your community. An Authors in Schools program allows you to work with local and visiting authors who can give presentations, lead workshops, and otherwise speak about their books that tie in with ongoing curricula.

Inventory Activism with Kimberly Daniels and Erica Merrell: Wednesday, Feb 14 at 2pm

Join SIBA Board Members Erica Merrell of Wild Iris Books and Kimberly Daniels of The Country Bookshop as they explain how inventory can be a powerful force when serving customers. Come learn how to best fill this customer need, walk away with title recommendations, and share your success stories. Whether your customers are looking to make changes in social, environmental or local issues, find out how the activist mantra of thinking global, acting local can increase customer engagement and revenue for your store.


EUREKAsiba CALL FOR PROPOSALS

November 15th is the deadline to submit a propsal for the upcoming EUREKAsiba talks.

In the spirit of discoveries worth sharing, SIBA invites proposals for 11-18 minute TEDx Talk format presentations on a given topic of interest to booksellers. We'd like proposals about a great idea. Ideas can be new or surprising, challenge a belief your audience of booksellers already has, or an idea with a compelling new argument behind it. We will choose ten EUREKA talks. This call should be considered by booksellers, authors, publishers, sales reps, and other industry professionals. We'd love to hear from you. Proposals are due November 15. SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY

The American Booksellers Association is partnering with Penguin Random House for a special giveaway in celebration of Indies First on Small Business Saturday, this year November 25. Between November 15 and November 26, Twitter and Instagram users who tag a U.S. independent bookstore and use the hashtag #ShopIndiesFirstSweepstakes will be entered to win $1,000 worth of books from Penguin Random House.

UNDISCOVERED TREASURES: EVENT PITCH SHEET

Event Pitch SheetHow does your store present itself to publishers when you are looking to have an author come to the store for an event? The competition can be high, and publishers are careful about how they spend their marketing dollars. Savvy stores create a resume of sorts for publicists that will help them see at a glance the strengths of their store and their ability to host a successful author event.

Here's a link to an event pitch sheet developed by The Bookwom in Colorado -- use it as a model to create your own store "event pitch sheet." It will also be a useful exercise in assessing your store's strengths as well as places you can improve in you own event programs.
