Wake Forest University is NOT in Wake Forest, NC!

Posted By Wanda Jewell, Tuesday, June 7, 2016

Who knew?  This is one of the million things I learned in my 48 hours in the town of Wake Forest, visiting Page 158 Books.  I read Small Data when the galley was first issued and was quite excited about the ideas and concepts shared, and was looking forward to hearing Martin Lindstrom at Winter Institute in Denver, but the planes, trains, and automobiles thwarted my efforts and I missed his talk.  Bummer! But no worries because lucky bookseller Sue Lucey won the in-person consult with Martin and both he, and Sue & Dave Lucey, Page 158 owners, agreed I could come visit when he did and it was amazing!  This visit will more than inform SIBA’s Peer Reviews.

Patrick & I jumped in the car on Wednesday and drove up and met Sue & Dave for dinner, and then joined them and their friends for Trivia Night (Beer Pressure took Third Place) at a local brewery a few doors down from their store.  We headed back to the Lucey abode and got a good nights’ sleep for what lay ahead.  I really didn’t know what Martin would do.  I think I imagined him sitting in a corner of the store watching, watching, looking, and listening for hours, and then delivering a to-do-list.  It was my hope that I might get a chance to take him to lunch and pick that massive brain and I did but there was so much more.

We all arrived at the store at 10am and sat in a circle with Martin immediately diving into conversation.  He’s reserved and chatty.  Thoughtful, and spontaneous, and if I sound like a fan-girl, I am.  First focusing on Sue & Dave’s biggest problem – Though located on the main street for a year, there were still thousands of locals that did not know they were there.  How to best get the word out?, Martin asked after the events or activities that had proven to be successful, and the coloring book nights came up.  We explored why that was so.  Childlike, easy, relaxing, social – these seemed to be the keys to its success, and then Martin asked about the Guinness World Book of Records for the largest coloring book?  Whaaatt?

Sidebar – Somatic Memory – This is a memory that shows up on a brain scan.  It can be positive or negative, but it is literally unforgettable.  All Page 158 need do is create a somatic memory.  An event so epic, that anyone who participates will never forget it, and he walked us through the steps to creating a somatic memory.

I’ll share more about my day with Martin Lindstrom and my time with Sue & Dave at Page 158 Books, in Wake Forest, NC – Where the College Used to Be – in the next installment of SIBA Express, but in the meantime, get you a copy of Small Data, and read it.  You won’t be sorry!
