Maximizing Success at the SIBA Discovery Show!

Posted By Linda-Marie Barrett, Wednesday, March 27, 2019

Maximizing Success at the SIBA Discovery Show!

We’d love to see you at our SIBA Discovery Show in Spartanburg, SC in September. We’re hosting this year’s show in a city steeped in literary culture, with numerous indie bookstores close by in Spartanburg and Greenville, and many more within easy driving distance just over the border in NC, TN, and GA. Booksellers from across the south will attend to see what you and other publishers and non-book vendors have to offer their stores. Have you registered yet? Here’s a link to do that now

If you’re planning to exhibit at the upcoming SIBA Discovery Show, there are some things you can do to make the most of opportunities the show provides to connect with booksellers. Having a strategy in place to draw people to your booth is important to making the show a success for you. In the coming weeks, we’ll be offering some great tips we’ve learned over the  years.

Tip #1: Request a mailing list in advance of the show
Although it is difficult to obtain an attendee list before the event, if you are a member of SIBA you can request a mailing list of SIBA member bookstores at any time. The list includes both snail mail and email contact information. Use the list to communicate with booksellers in advance of the show. Reminding them of a booth signing or offering a small give-away they can pick up at the booth is an effective way to generate traffic to your exhibit space. Consider making appointments during show hours to meet them, hear what they need, and how you might meet those needs. Start connecting now to build relationships that will translate into winning opportunities for you and indie bookstores.

Would you like to be part of a future Publisher Picks session with SIBA Booksellers?

Posted By Linda-Marie Barrett, Wednesday, March 13, 2019

Would you like to be part of a future Publisher Picks session with SIBA Booksellers?

SIBA’s new Publisher Picks program brings publishers and booksellers together outside of store visits and the Discovery Show. The opportunity to present will be particularly beneficial to SIBA member publishers whose reps may not get to visit all 150 SIBA member stores. And what’s more--it’s free!

What's involved: Every other month SIBA hosts sessions on Zoom where publishers, editors, and reps promote their favorite new titles to booksellers. Booksellers will earn B3! Points (which translate into dollars to pay for SIBA dues and events) for attending, get to know the territory’s reps, and discover some new titles to add to their store shelves. Buyers and frontline booksellers are encouraged to attend.

Would you like to present your titles at a future session? Please email lindamarie@sibaweb.com. We have openings for the following sessions:

JUNE - Fall Fiction

AUGUST - Small Presses Present Fall & Winter Lists

OCTOBER - Sidelines for Holiday Sales & Beyond

In Search of Some Wonderful Southern Stories

Posted By Wanda Jewell, Tuesday, March 12, 2019

It starts with a book.

We are looking for a dozen or so wonderful southern books.

TRIO is a traveling exhibit of art, music and literature that celebrates the inspirational power of great storytelling. Conceived by Shari Smith of Working Title Farm, TRIO is a testament to the way words, music and art can come together around the power of a single story. Each TRIO starts with a book, which is given to a musician who writes a song, and a visual artist who creates a work of art, each inspired by the story.

The TRIO exhibit debuts at the SIBA Discovery Show, and then travels around the South, hosted and sponsored by SIBA member bookstores. The cost to place your book in TRIO is $2900.

Contingent upon acceptance, placement in the TRIO exhibit means:

  • Your Book is traveled, promoted to bookstores, booksellers, art patrons, and music fans throughout the south all year long.

  • Exclusive launch at #SIBA19, the TRIO Exhibit is prominently displayed throughout the entire weekend of the Discovery Show.

  • A full year of cross promotion on social media from the songwriter plus the visual artist, plus continual social media on the TRIO Facebook page, and across SIBA’s 50,000 social media contacts

  • $1200 rebate in SIBA advertising

  • A Lady Banks feature of your TRIO title

Contact Wanda Jewell at wanda@sibaweb.com for placement information. Learn morehere.

Here's what writers have to say about TRIO:

"I can say this about my TRIO experience: I have sold out at every event I attended. But TRIO is not just about sales, it's about the family created among writers, visual artists and songwriters. And that family is unparalleled. I have met folks that are woven into my fabric for the rest of my life."
-Bren McClain, author of One Good Mama Bone

"Trio has been a wonderful experience. To see and hear your book through the talents of people like artist Robert Oren Eades and musician Radney Foster is something you do not expect when you sit down to write, but once the works come together they form a holistic artifact that is undeniably more powerful than a single book, a single piece of art, a single song. Trio has gotten my book into hands that may have otherwise never held it, and it has gotten my words into the eyes and ears of people who may never read them."
-Wiley Cash, author of The Last Ballad

Let us know if you'd like your title considered for Trio '20.

SIBA Booksellers aka Voracious Readers aka Amazing Cheerleaders

Posted By Nicki Leone, Tuesday, January 15, 2019

"This absolutely adorable rhyming story will have young readers assssssking to read it again and again."Snakes on a Train by Kathryn Dennis, reviewed by The Country Bookshop in Southern Pines, NC

Read This!SIBA booksellers talk about a lot of books. Just ask their customers. They also sell a lot of books. Just ask their suppliers. And SIBA booksellers review a staggering number of books. Just ask Edelweiss.

In the past year, SIBA booksellers submitted over 1000 book reviews to Edelweiss: 1032 reviews of books published in 2018, to be exact. It's an amazing outpouring of enthusiasm and love of literature of all kinds. Over a third of SIBA's member stores submitted reviews -- 50 different stores -- and more than a third of those posted more than 30 reviews.

"Say Jonathan Strange, Mr. Norrell, and Lolita had a ménage à trois in a quaint English village inhabited by the likes of Jack the Ripper and Little Dorrit. Wonderful, readable, oddly moving and also...odd."
Unclay by TF Powys, review by Flyleaf Books, Chapel Hill, NC

The top five stores for posting reviews are

  1. The Country Bookshop in Southern Pines, NC (121 reviews)
  2. Avid Bookshop, Athens, GA: (117 reviews)
  3. Fiction Addiction, Greenville, SC: (98 reviews)
  4. Fountain Bookstore, Richmond, VA (91 reviews)
  5. Bookmarks in Winston-Salem, NC (77 reviews)

Malaprop's in Asheville, NC, Page 158 Books in Wake Forest, NC, and The Bookmiser in Marietta, GA all posted over 50 reviews.

"This is an honest look at how to keep parental relationships good while blending new partners into the mix, and it will make you feel great about your own dysfunctional family."
The Adults by Caroline Hulse, reviewed by Fountain Bookstore, Richmond, VA

Who sees reviews posted on Edelweiss aside from publishers and industry insiders? SIBA does. SIBA looks to the reviews posted on Edelweiss by its member stores as indicators for which books are going to be important to its members, and buzzed to southern readers. We use posted reviews in a variety of ways to help the buzz along:

  • SIBA publishes highlights from the week's reviews in our weekly newsletter to booksellers (SIBALAND) and to industry (SIBA Express), letting booksellers know what books their colleagues are especially excited about.

  • SIBA treats reviews of eligible titles as de facto nominations to its Okra Picks and Southern Book Prize programs

  • We reprint reviews once the books are published in the Lady Banks newsletter which has a reach of approximately 60,000 readers. Books are always linked back to the reviewing store for purchase

  • SIBA posts the reprinted reviews as books are published on its consumer-targeted website, AuthorsRoundtheSouth.com (ARTS) "READ THIS! Books with Street Cred" has become a phenomenal resource of recommended reading (100% Algorithm Free!) from Southern booksellers. Books are tagged by topic, award, and IndieNext and are searchable by title, author, and keyword:

Graphic Novels | Romance | Travel Literature | Feminism | Beach Reads

Reviews are shared on social media and always link back to the reviewing store. "Read This" is one of the most visited and popular sections of the ARTS website.
