It's Show Time! The #SIBA19 Discovery Show is Upon Us!
There are so many things coming up at the show this year but I'm particularly excited about ourMilk & Cookies Pajama Silent Reading Gathering on Friday night. These are a few of my favorite things: cookies, pjs, books, reading with friends - I imagine this could be a great event for bookstores to host and I'll let you know how easy it is. The hardest part may be picking out my pajamas. I hope everyone will bring their book and settle in for a couple of hours of community silent reading. I think this could be healing. Let's find out.
Saturday Night Hub City Press is hosting a blow out celebration after the Reader Dinner. It's right across the street from the hotel and it will be a night to remember. Spartanburg is so excited we are bringing all of you to their town and they want to show us a good time. So make sure to put this event on your dance card. You don't want to miss it. Drinks are on Hub City!

SIBA promotes six new books every month to consumers in our Lady Banks Bookshelf promotion. These titles appear at the top of our weekly Lady Banks Commonplace Book newsletter, which has a circulation of over 60k. We also feature them above the fold on the homepage of Authors ‘Round the South and on the cover image of the ARTS Facebook page with buy links promoted to our 15,000 Facebook friends. A different member store is featured with the titles every week.
By promoting through Lady Banks, publishers are making an investment in SIBA member bookstores’ attention and market. SIBA works with them to select titles your customers are looking for, and then we drive those customers to your stores. It’s very worth your while to bring Lady Banks Bookshelf titles in before the month begins, and put up a display.
Edelweiss announced the release of their new “Edelweiss +Communities” this week. This allows groups of users with similar interests or functions to share reviews, collections, nominations, and more. If you are a bookseller member of SIBA, you most likely are already in our community. SIBA provided Edelweiss a list of our membership, which they used along with their own list of SIBA Edelweiss users to create the SIBA community. However, if you do not see SIBA among your communities, please join us. You can find SIBA in the list of available communities to join.
You can access the communities set up tool by clicking on “people” in the top menu, beneath the search bar. Clicking on “people” directs you to the “communities set up tool,” which you can click on for more information beyond the list of available communities to join.
One important change is the removal of the “Send to SIBA” option with reviews. You can still share your reviews with SIBA by choosing the SIBA community box, along with any other community you’re including in the review share. By sharing with SIBA, your reviews count as Okra Pick and Southern Book Prize nominations, earn you B3! points, plus potential inclusion in our newsletters to booksellers and our industry partners, on our consumer-facing ARTS site, in Lady Banks newsletter, and more. You’re also alerting other SIBA booksellers to the books you’re loving and recommending in your store, which helps everyone stay on top of what’s new and noteworthy. When SIBA booksellers get behind a book, it becomes a regional and, often, national bestseller. So, let’s stay connected in the SIBA “community” on Edelweiss and make great things happen. If you have any problems joining the SIBA community or accessing "Communities" on Edelweiss, please contact us. We're here to help you!
States in your territory:Alabama (AL), Arkansas (AR), Florida (FL), Georgia (GA), Kentucky (KY), Louisiana (LA), Mississippi (MS), North Carolina (NC), South Carolina (SC), Tennessee (TN), and Virginia (VA).
Number of years as a rep:This is my first year as a rep. It has been an eye-opening experience as I’ve now looked into the world of independent booksellers and their effect on communities and the consumption of all types of literature.
Best part about being a rep: Working closely with the dedicated independent bookstore employees, seeing the enthusiasm and passion the publishing industry shares, better understanding the customer base in each region, and having a small influence on how and where great literature finds its home.
What were you doing before you became a rep? Most recently I worked for HarperCollins in New York as a Foreign Rights Associate, where I sold translation rights into over thirty-five territories for four major HarperCollins imprints. Before that, I worked as a Literary Scout for Mary Anne Thompson Associates and as a Foreign Rights Assistant at Trident Media Group.
What's the coolest thing/a great idea you've seen at one of your stores?Drag Queen Storytime and/or a book delivery service (like ordering a pizza, but books!).
Do you see Edelweiss reviews from booksellers? Occasionally! However, I’d love to see more and begin interacting more frequently using this great industry wide resource we share.
Do you follow any stores especially closely on social media? What are they doing right? I think if you have an active social media presence, you’re already ahead of the game. There are so many people out there looking for a sense of community and to share enthusiasm towards their interests. Reviewing books and kicking off discussions on social media can be a great way to interact with your customers. Also incentivizing them with special social media promotions can be a great way to increase your audience and promote events.
What can a bookseller do to make a sales call more effective?Being forthright about how much time you can devote to the call and your personal preferences. Some accounts enjoy discussing IPG’s list title by title, others only like going over the highlights. Some prefer to submit an order and only expect a small additional list of suggestions, while others prefer a curated list based off past orders and conversations. As a rep, I’m always happy to direct our call in the direction you’d prefer! Whatever is easiest and most effective for you.
Most memorable thing that’s happened during a sales call? Mid call our building was struck by lightning, all of the power went out in the building, and a small fire started close by. Being evacuated in the midst of a huge rainstorm was a sales call I certainly won’t forget. It may sound like a ‘dog ate my homework’ moment, but I promise I didn’t hang up – the power went out!
What’s one thing you wish bookstores would do, or do more often? Take a chance on more fiction. There are so many great voices out there – from smaller and independent publishers – that deserve to be given a chance to sell, to have a prominent spot on the shelf, and find an audience.
Favorite book you’re currently promoting:Into Captivity They Will Go by Noah Milligan (adult), How to be Remy Cameron by Julian Winters (YA), and A Friendship Yarn by Lisa Moser (children’s).
What three things should a bookstore have when they come to meet with you at your booth at the #SIBA19 Discovery Show? Unfortunately, I will not be attending SIBA this year – it coincidentally falls on the week of my wedding! However, my colleague Aaron Howe will be there. I think it's always helpful to have a business card, time to get to know each other and hear more about IPG’s amazing list, and a sense of adventure – it can be fun to pick up a title you may not have normally sought out.
Patterson announced in May that he would pledge a personal contribution of $250,000 to independent bookstore employees, which will be granted in amounts of $500 to 500 individual booksellers. New this year, 100 of the bonuses will be set aside for children’s booksellers. This year’s campaign is open to all U.S. independent bookstore employees through October 12.

The reviews booksellers submit to Edelweiss have become one of the most important tools SIBA has to promote and advocate for its members in the book industry and to the reading public at large. It's so important that SIBA gives stores SIBA credit for every review they post. A couple reviews a week can really add up!
Things to keep in mind when you submit reviews:
Check your store information is accurate on your account. SIBA only looks at reviews from stores within SIBA territory. If you have no State information, or if your Organization doesn't correspond with SIBA records, your reviews won't show up in our list
Make sure your review "role type" equals "Bookseller." We filter out all non-bookseller reviews, and if you don't select a role type at all, your review will not be reported to SIBA.
Note: If you have never actually requested a review copy on Edelweiss, you may not have ever been prompted to choose a role type. The best way to fix that is to go to the Review Copies section in Edelweiss and click on one of the request buttons. (see below)
Get your staff to participate. More reviewers = more SIBA credit and more chances for your store to be seen by publishers, customers, and potential customers. (Hear from Jill Hendrix at Fiction Addication on how she gets her staff involved on Edelweiss
How does SIBA use your reviews?
Store reviews (and consequently store reviewers) are shared on SIBA's websites, blogs, newsletters and social media:
Reviews of forthcoming books are shared on both SIBA's bookstore and industry blogs, and sent out via the "SIBALAND" newsletter to every bookseller, publisher, sales rep, and publicist in our database.
Positive reviews of eligible titles are marked as potential Okra Picks for the forthcoming season and considered de facto nominations for The Southern Book Prize
Once the books are published, positive reviews are posted to SIBA's consumer website, AuthorsRoundtheSouth.com under its Read This! banner. All books are linked back to the recommending store for purchase. There are nearly 1000 book reviews from Southern booksellers on the ARTS website, making it one of the most extensive collections of bookseller recommendations online.
The current week's reviews are published in the Lady Banks newsletter, and featured in all editions of the Lady Banks Calendar newsletter of member store events.
Blurbs from store reviews are also used wherever appropriate in the promotional materials SIBA creates for its member bookstores.
Thanks to the Edelweiss Reviewer tool, your short reviews can have a big impact for your store.

Indie bookstores nationwide will celebrate the romance book genre with store events, author readings, and themed merchandise on Saturday, August 17, 2019. Avoiding the oversaturation of Valentine’s Day in February, Bookstore Romance Day is scheduled to take place during Romance Awareness Month, occurring each August (because August is the hottest month of the year). Begun in 1987 by Eileen Buchheim, Romance Awareness Month was intended to celebrate romance in all its forms. Tired of the antiquated notion that independent bookstores are too snobby to sell romance titles, the independent booksellers behind Bookstore Romance Day intend to show romance authors, romance publishers, and romance readers that romance books are more than supported – they’re celebrated. “There are those of us who have been quietly reading and supporting the genre for years, and we’re being joined and supported by a new generation of booksellers who believe all reading is good reading,” said Billie Bloebaum of Third Street Books in McMinnville, OR, the bookseller who first proposed the event. “There’s still a lot of work to do, still hearts and minds to change, but progress is being made, and an event like this should, we hope, raise the visibility of romance-friendly bookstores.” The 2019 date is intended to be a soft launch for what will become a yearly event with booksellers and bookstores around the country, corporate and independent publishers, authors from all romance genres and sub-genres, and romance readers coming together for author readers, in-store and virtual events, exclusive merchandise, and above all, a celebration of love and romance.

Deadline to participate in ABACUS extended to July 12
The ABA has pushed back the deadline to submit your store's info to the annual ABACUS survey. By becoming part of the ABACUS community of participating bookstores, booksellers will receive:
a full ABACUS benchmarking report (including comparative financial ratios, operations data, and company profile information),
a customized bookstore performance report, and
a range of online reporting tools that provide a wide variety of specific analyses, allowing stores to evaluate performance versus similar companies and track their company’s performance over time against the industry results, among other criteria.
(Asheville, NC) –Southern indie booksellers have announced their 2019 Summer Okra Picks, a baker’s dozen of the titles they are most looking forward to telling their customers to try. Taken together, the Okra Picks are not your average summer reading list – each book was chosen because it is Southern in nature and has devoted fans in the Southern indie bookselling community. The Summer Okra Picks release in July, August, and September, and every book on the list has a Southern bookseller ready to put it in the hands of readers with that most exciting phrase in the English language, “You’ve got to read this!”
