THE SITE VISIT (AKA, Nicki goes to VALSPAR)

Innisbrook ResortWhen Wanda Jewell told me that our annual site visit to the Innisbrook Resort in preparation for upcoming Discovery Show in September would be in March, she did warn me. "It will be during Valspar" she cautioned. I must have looked blank, because she added "the golf tournament." I shrugged and nodded. It was Florida. There would be golf, I thought.

It wasn't until we hit the traffic on US 19 and found ourselves behind a row of coach buses that I realized, oh it's a GOLF TOURNAMENT. I'm not a huge golf fan, but I still immediately called my dad. "Guess where I am!" I gloated. (Read more! || Register for #SIBA18)

So what do we have to look forward to in September?

Copperhead Course

Well, the place is beautiful.

The exhibit hall is fantastic.

The rooms are really, really comfortable.

TonyMEET THE BOOKSELLER

Tony Peltier, Quail Ridge Books, Raleigh, NC

website || facebook || twitter

How long you've been a bookseller: I've been a bookseller for 16 years. 10 years at Borders and 6 at Quail Ridge.

Best part about being a bookseller: . . .is the books! I get to buy and sell books for a living! And, of course, connecting with people through books.

Sadness is a White Bird Frankenstein in BaghdadThe Mars RoomThe Sea Beast Takes a Lover

Tony's Staff FavoritesBooks I'm reading:
I just finished Sadness is a White Bird by Moriel Rothman-Zecher. Almost finished The Sea Beast Takes a Lover by Michael Andreasen. In the middle of Frankenstein in Baghdad by Ahmed Saadawi. And just started The Mars Room by Rachel Kushner.

They are all wonderful and completely different from each other.

Spill Simmer Falter WitherFavorite handsell of 2017:
Spill Simmer Falter Wither by Sara Baume
So beautiful and beautifully written, devastatingly sad, but in a way that reminds you that you're alive.

Social Media Handles: I'm not on social media. I did Twitter for about 6 months, but made myself delete it.

Best thing we did this year at the store:
I'd have to say, the amazing people we hired this year. We have a wonderful staff, but this year in particular we added some incredible people with great experience in and out of bookselling

Top priority for 2018: Get the word out. Get all these amazing books in people's hands and brains.

And get people to realize that if they don't buy from us, we won't be around forever. Don't take your independent bookstore for granted.

Favorite SIBA programming benefit:
SIBA gave scholarships to two of our staff to go to New Orleans, which they raved about. I'd love to learn more about what SIBA does.

BRILLIANT BOOKSELLER IDEA(S) OF THE WEEK:

Ask us about them on your next visit!"

GET YOUR STAFF INVOLVED

SIBA wants to reach your frontline booksellers

Did you know that every SIBA core member store can add as many staff as they'd like to their account? SIBA encourages stores to include their staff under their accounts so they have access to all the information and opportunities available to SIBA member booksellers, including information about scholarships, review copy offers, calls for nominations for Okra Picks and the Southern Book Prize, and heads up about important upcoming events.

Here's how to add staff members to your account:

  1. Log in. Then navigate to your account profile by clicking at the top of the page where it says "Welcome"
  2. Click on the "Information & Settings" tab on the left in your profile.
  3. Select "Sub-accounts" from the options at the top of the profile.

From there, you can create sub accounts yourself, or send invites to your staff. Every account must have it's own unique email address, so there is no need to sign up all your staff under the store email. But you can invite them using their own email.

You can also simply send a list of your staff -- names and email addresses -- to nicki@sibaweb.com, and SIBA will add them to your accout.

THE SOUTHERN BOOK PRIZE

Nominations are due by February 14! | NOMINATE HERE

#southernbookprize #SBP18badge

NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR 2018 AWARD

Each year, hundreds of booksellers across the South vote on their favorite "handsell" books of the year. These are the "southern" books they have most enjoyed selling to customers; the ones that they couldn't stop talking about. The Southern Book Prize was created to recognize great books of southern origin.

What books can be nominated? For a book to be eligible, it must be set in the South, or the author must be Southern (preferably both) and it must have been published within the previous calendar year.

Who can nominate a book? Books can be nominated by SIBA-member booksellers. But stores can submit nominations on behalf of the their customers, so if you are not a bookseller, you can request your local bookstore nominate a title on your behalf.

If I nominated an Okra Pick, does that count? It sure does! All Okra Pick books are automatically included as Southern Book Prize nominations.

B3! WEBINARS

February 14 at 2PM: Inventory Activism with Kimberly Daniels and Erica Merrell.

Join Erica Merrell, former owner of Wild Iris Books, and SIBA Board member Kimberly Daniels of The Country Bookshop as they explain how inventory can be a powerful force when serving customers. Whether your customers are looking to make changes in social, environmental or local issues, find out how the activist mantra of thinking global, acting local can increase customer engagement and revenue for your store.

BRILLIANT BOOKSELLER IDEA OF THE WEEK:

Encouraging Diversity in Young Readers

Northshire's 'Open Mind' Scholarship
Northshire Bookstore, with locations in Manchester, Vt., and Saratoga Springs, N.Y., has launched the Open Mind Scholarship, which is designed to honor "the diversity of thought, feelings, information and perspectives found in books, as well as the power of books to change people's lives." Each year the Northshire will award $1,000 scholarships to two college-bound high school seniors, one from New York and one from Vermont. To enter the contest, students must write up to one page on how a book has exposed them to something new and how it has impacted their lives.

Bookselling without BordersBOOKSELLING WITHOUT BORDERS

Scholarship applications are now being accepted

Bookselling Without Borders is a program that has been developed to encourage diverse and international literature and also to connect American booksellers to the global publishing community. It is generously supported by Catapult, Europa Editions, Graywolf, The New Press, Other Press, Princeton University Press, Rutgers University Press — and also by Ingram Content Group and the Frankfurt Book Fair U.S. Bookseller Prize.

Twelve all-expenses-paid scholarships will be awarded this year.

MEET THE BOOKSELLER!

Brandie B. JohnsonBrandie Bradshaw Johnson, Read Herring, Montgomery, AL

"We just want people to come and see the new store, see the new changes that we've made. If they've been in the store in the past-we've made some updates and upgrades. But it still has that vintage, comfortable feel" - Brandie B. Johnson

store || facebook

Name: Brandie Bradshaw Johnson

Store and location:
Read Herring, Montgomery, AL

Number of years as a bookseller: Less than one.

Best part about being a bookseller?:
Read HerringI love that I get to help further the life of a book. It was written, published, printed, now it's waiting to be read. So often the books that I handsell are books that a customer wouldn't necessarily find on their own. Books that aren't going to be on Amazon's "frequently purchased" list, or on the front table of a big chain store, or even on a best seller list. But they're incredible books all the same, they just need a little help getting into people's hands. And, watching a customer's face when they realize you've just handed them the bookthat book they really wanted to read but just didn't know it, is elating. .

What book(s) are you reading?:
Born a Crime by Trevor Noah and The Alienist by Caleb Carr. I don't usually read two books at once because I get all mixed up on characters, but with one being a biography and the other a novel, I haven't yet confused myself.

Favorite handsell of 2017:
Matzo Frogs by Sally Rosenthal. It's a precious children book about a group of frogs making the traditional Jewish Matzo Ball soup. The best part was, I didn't know when I suggested the book that the customer's grandchildren were Jewish, and when I produced the book she was delighted; not only because her grandchildren would find the frogs to be cute and funny, but because, of all of the children's books I could have picked, I chose to suggest a children's book that celebrates a culture I did not even know the customer had a personal connection to.  .

Best thing you did this year at your store:
We rebranded. The store was originally The NewSouth Bookstore. The bookstore shares a building with the publisher NewSouth Books, owned by my business partners. My partners and I came to the realization that promoting two separate businesses, with almost identical names, in the same location was pretty darn hard. So, Read Herring was born. My parents and I crafted a 5' 5" red fish that has a top hat and suitcase. He traveled around downtown Montgomery for a week, standing in front of local businesses. We had a big campaign with social media posts, newsletters, and custom postcards with Swedish fish attached promoting the new name and encouraging people to go find the fish (we named him Harry) and take a picture with him. If they posted the picture on our Facebook page and used the hashtag #wellreadherring, they were entered into a drawing for daily prizes. Anyone who found him in every location had a chance to win the grand prize. The daily prizes were books that related to the type of business Harry was at that day. The grand prize was a basket full of merchandise/gift cards from all of the participating businesses. We made the news a few times and had a feature article in the business section of The Montgomery Advertiser. It was a ton of fun. There's talk of our rebranding campaign being submitted for consideration for a design award.

We have roughly 250 Facebook followers. We don't have a Twitter right now. I have zero tweeting skills and I think if you're going to have the account, it needs to be well run. Our biggest draw is our newsletter. It usually hits a 14% to 21% open rate, which is higher than the standard for the retail industry, or at least that's what Mail Chimp tells me. Our newspaper is really great here and they like to throw little blurbs and pictures of the store in to the paper when they can. Our customer base is not as vested in social media. Word of mouth and general foot traffic also drive customers to the store.

Top priority going into 2018:
Expanding the store. We have plans to add a stellar children's area and sprinkle in some sidelines. I regularly wake up at 3 am mumbling things like "Dad can build a tree to go in the corner. Oh, and carve a bench out of a log!" Really though, we have some exciting plans for the space. Getting kids interested in reading and making it a fun experience is honestly one of the most important things a bookstore does.

I think other than the children's space, my top priority is just to keep the momentum up. We had record breaking sales in October and our foot traffic has increased in the past few months. I want to keep the store out in front of the community and make it one of those places people are drawn to. You know the kind of space I'm talking about. That quintessential small town bookstore, where you just want to hunker down in one of the chairs and read the day away. The kind of place Jesmyn Ward or Michelle Obama might want to pop by... A girl can dream, right?

Favorite SIBA programming benefit:
The Peer Brain Trust. I just recently found it on the SIBA website and I think it's great! So often my partners and I will talk about programs and ideas we'd like to implement and then spend days spinning our wheels and wracking out brains trying to figure out where to start. The most helpful one I've found so far is the working with schools section. Now that we're adding a children's section, forming relationships with our local schools is a must. This section has given me some good ideas and allowed me to find a "jumping off point" if you will.

BRILLIANT BOOKSELLER OF THE WEEK:

Image of the Day: 'Every Book Is a Tardis'

Kurtis Lowe of Book Travelers West took this photo of owner Lisa Reid in the new Tardis featured in her store, Lucy's Books in Astoria, Ore.

Why a Tardis in a bookstore? Reid explained: "Every book is a Tardis, so a Tardis in a bookstore seems reasonable."
