Banned Books Week is October 1-7
Banned Books Week and the ABA have many resources available to help raise awareness about the danger and damage of book banning efforts currently underway. They include an updated the Banned Books Week Handbook with programming ideas, best practices for events, resources, and tips for handling censorship. The ABA has digital toolkits available, including banned books bingo, counter displays, and banned book merch. The National Coalition Against Censorship, in cooperation with the American Booksellers for Free Expression, has also launched The Kids' Right to Read Project to provide support, education, and direct advocacy to people facing book challenges or bans in schools. The SIBA Board of Directors invites all members to attend the 2023 SIBA Annual Meeting and Town Hall on October 11, 2023 at 1 PM, Eastern, on Zoom. The meeting will include a report on the State of SIBA and reports from SIBA staff. The board will report on the work being done on behalf of the membership, and the results of the 2023 board ballot will be announced. There will also be time for questions from attendees.

September Indie-to-Indie Playlists: Back to School & Break Out Books

Publishers have created not one but TWO new playlists -- one specifically for those interested in learning new tricks (a Back to School playlist), and the other celebrating new voices in literature (a Breakouts & Debuts playlist). There's something for everyone on each of these lists to help round out your displays and make sure your customers can always find something new in your bookstore.

Cavalier House Books in Denham Springs, LA has partnered with their local newspaper, the Livingston Parish News, to host Coffee with the Candidates, a series of events where citizens of the parish have a chance to meet their candidates and learn more about them, outside of what they see on social media.

Ask Candice Anything!

In this column, members can ask Candice anything, and they will provide an answer if they know! If you want to ask Candice something that may be in a future column, email candice@sibaweb.com.

This month’s question is: What exactly does the SIBA Board do?

As a previous Board member, I can answer this one! The Board are your representatives, and they guide the direction of the SIBA organization as a whole. They regularly review SIBA’s by-laws and governance policies and evaluate SIBA's performance. The Board also acts as advocates for SIBA's members.

Board terms are three years, and they do not get paid for service, but expenses incurred are generally covered by SIBA. Being on the Board requires attendance at board meetings plus a Carver training session, as SIBA functions under The Carver Method. Adequate preparation for all meetings is also required. The Board acts as representatives of SIBA at events and hears member questions and concerns as it relates to the organization as a whole.

The current Board has worked on updating SIBA's by-laws, expanding the definition of a "core bookstore member" to be more inclusive, and expanding the size of the Board to better respond to the changing industry. The Board has also responded to the book banning issues many of our members face.

As you can see, the Board works for you! It’s up to our members to volunteer for and nominate folks for the Board so we can ensure diversity among identities and states. If your state is not currently represented, think about nominating someone (even yourself!) during the next call for nominations.

One of the new events launched at this month's New Voices New Rooms conference was "Genre Buzz" - a somewhat unique approach to title discovery in that Genre Buzz was a series of bookseller-led discussions about their favorite genres -- what they loved about them, how they sold them, the books they were looking forward to and the books that got them hooked. It they hadn't been scheduled in the middle of the exhibit hall we might have called them "retreats," (and can we just say, sixteen different tables filled with booksellers eagerly talking about their favorite romance/horror/fantasy/thriller books is something to be seen).

NVNR created Edelweiss collections and printable flyers for each Genre Buzz topic, and while they can't equal the enthusiasm of a table full of genre-loving booksellers, they do all make for some great displays and book club reading lists.
