A Great Start to the Holiday Season for Many SIBA Stores

A Great Start to the Holiday Season for Many SIBA Stores

It was a big weekend for booksellers across the country. In SIBA territory, the reports coming in are exuberant! I volunteered on Saturday at Avid Bookshop’s Five Points location in Athens, GA, where customers were greeted personally and guided to books they wanted and some they didn’t know they wanted! Avid’s sideline selection is stunning--by turns hilarious and honoring of all things literary and unique. I purchased a lovely hand-felted angel ornament for a friend, and a birthday card from Red Caps Press. I intend to pick up a set of “Journals for the Middle Child” on a future visit. A gift to myself :)

I worked with John and Christy, both on Avid’s events team, and with Janet, the store’s owner. This is the first year of The Avid Bookshop Bash (TABB), five days of celebration centered around the weekend after Thanksgiving. After each purchase, Avid booksellers offered customers prizes ranging from gift cards to commemorative bookmarks. As I wrapped gifts, I overheard so many customers praising the store and staff and making plans to come back before TABB ended on Giving Tuesday.

More reports from SIBA stores about their weekend sales:

Kimberly Daniels Taws, The Country Bookshop, Southern Pines, NC:

“Small Business Saturday was a big day for us. We gave everyone 10% off (something new for us) and we were up 42% over last year! This is really interesting and I think driven by our "spend $50 and get a gift" because we only had 8 more transactions than last year but sold 121 more units. The incentive of a gift at that price point, just higher than a hard cover and a paperback caused people to really increase their units per purchase. We saw a GREAT many out-of-towners, and locals who are discovering the bookshop for the first time, or making an annual pilgrimage.

We sold a lot of the staff picks, big books (Obama, Sparks, Jeff Kinney), and saw a real drive for autographed books. We also sold A LOT of The Broken Ornament. The Invisible Ink little books by Lee Publications are at very low price point and have sold very well for us.”

Jamie Rogers Southern, Bookmarks, Winston-Salem, NC:

“We had a great weekend! Because of our nonprofit status, we cannot flat out do "shop small" promotions so ours is more of a quiet attack. We had board members in to provide free gift wrapping throughout the weekend and our board president offered to match all purchases as a donation to our Book Build initiative during her shift. She ended up donating $1,400!

We were up 33% on the weekend and top selling items were: Becoming, We Should All Be Feminists, Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows, Wimpy Kid Meltdown, and Shade. Some of these titles were because we have our staff picks of 2018 reading up and people heavily shop off of them at the holidays. We did not do much programming this year, just our regular storytime and book art by a local artist on Saturday afternoon.

I loved seeing so many of our regular customers and volunteers bring in family and friends who were visiting from out of town and overhearing them talk about the bookstore as theirs!”

Stephanie Crowe, Page & Palette, Fairhope, Alabama: “Page & Palette had a busy day on Saturday, which included author visits by Karyn Tunks, author of Mardi Gras in Mobile and Michael and Sarah Hewes, authors of The Tempestuous Trial of Maybelline Meriweather.”

Pictured below from left to right are the authors visiting Page & Palette, a scene from Bookmarks, and the front and back sides of Avid's commemorative TABB bookmarks.

Celebrating Avid's Bookshop Bash!

Posted By Linda-Marie Barrett, Wednesday, November 14, 2018

Celebrating Avid's Bookshop Bash!

I’m readying my gift-wrapping and handselling skills for a volunteer shift at Avid Bookshop in Athens, GA on Small Business Saturday/Indies First. This special day is just one of a five-day celebration called The Avid Bookshop Bash (TABB). John Farina, the events coordinator for Avid Bookshop, revealed what’s in store for readers and gift-buyers in their community.

TABB is a series of events taking place 11/23-11/27 to celebrate another year of open doors and loyal customers.

  •  11/23- Book Friday (Black Friday in a really comfy sweater)
  • 11/24- Small Business Saturday

  • 11/25- Celebration Sunday

  • 11/26- Cider Monday

  • 11/27-Giving Tuesday

Though the other days are celebrated by indie bookstores nationally, Celebration Sunday is specific to Avid, celebrating the anniversaries of their newest location and the original Avid Bookshop.

To thank customers for their support, every purchase during TABB earns a prize. Prizes, drawn by the customer at the time of purchase, include commemorative bookmarks, a Libro.fm subscription, and a $50 Avid Bookshop Gift Card. To keep customers coming back during TABB, Avid will offer TABB Punch Cards that are hole-punched every time a customer makes a purchase.  (Customers receive an extra hole punch if they shop at Avid on Book Friday). Customers will receive “Bash Cash” coupons in $5 increments, in line with the number of holes punched.

Avid will also take donations throughout TABB for a local nonprofit, Books for Keepsand send them the proceeds on Giving Tuesday.

Avid Bookshop will be posting about The Avid Bookshop Bash leading up to the event and throughout. Be inspired and maybe do your own variation! I’ll report back in after Small Business Saturday with a recap. Happy Thanksgiving and Holiday Bookselling!

  • Store with Indiecommerce Sites:
The American Booksellers Association will have the catalog available for stores to add to their sites shortly.
  • Stores with other ecommerce options:
SIBA can provide a customized file with your store ecommerce links. Email nicki@sibaweb.com
  • Stores without ecommerce:

What SIBA is doing to help:
The catalog will be promoted at AuthorsRoundtheSouth.com (ARTS) starting the week of Thanksgiving. Stores with active ecommerce will rotate as the click through destination for each of the books. The catalog titles are also featured in the Lady Banks newsletter as a "gift guide" and the gift guide itself is featured between Thanksgiving and the New Year on the ARTS Facebook page and on the Lady Banks Bookshelf. In short, SIBA will be making a concerted effort to drive traffic to the websites of stores that ordered the catalog.

  • Materials to help with in-store catalog displays, and "shareable" graphics for your social media are available here (scroll to the bottom)
  • Both Ingram and Baker & Taylor have ordering specials in place for holiday catalog titles:

EUREKAsiba CALL FOR PROPOSALS

November 15th is the deadline to submit a propsal for the upcoming EUREKAsiba talks.

In the spirit of discoveries worth sharing, SIBA invites proposals for 11-18 minute TEDx Talk format presentations on a given topic of interest to booksellers. We'd like proposals about a great idea. Ideas can be new or surprising, challenge a belief your audience of booksellers already has, or an idea with a compelling new argument behind it. We will choose ten EUREKA talks. This call should be considered by booksellers, authors, publishers, sales reps, and other industry professionals. We'd love to hear from you. Proposals are due November 15. Send proposals to Wanda Jewell

UNDISCOVERED TREASURES: EVENT PITCH SHEET

Event Pitch SheetHow does your store present itself to publishers when you are looking to have an author come to the store for an event? The competition can be high, and publishers are careful about how they spend their marketing dollars. Savvy stores create a resume of sorts for publicists that will help them see at a glance the strengths of their store and their ability to host a successful author event.

Here's a link to an event pitch sheet developed by The Bookwom in Colorado -- use it as a model to create your own store "event pitch sheet." It will also be a useful exercise in assessing your store's strengths as well as places you can improve in you own event programs.

#indiesfirst #holidaycatalog #okrapicks: News you can use from the land of SIBA

Posted By Nicki Leone, Monday, November 7, 2016

Dearest and most beloved booksellers,

We know you have other things on your mind this week -- you and the entire rest of the country! But please do take a moment to read the items below. They are things we think will be important and helpful to your business in the coming weeks and we want to make sure you take full advantage.

Small Business SaturdayI. Indies First/Small Business Saturday is October 26
An open letter from ABA CEO Oren Teicher

Dear Bookseller,

Indies First/Small Business Saturday, November 26, will be here before we know it, and I wanted to be sure you had explored the many offers of generous business terms (http://www.bookweb.org/2016-indies-first-publisher-terms) for ABA members from our publisher partners. The Indies First publisher specials are really extraordinary, and with thoughtful ordering these terms can make a real difference to your bottom line.

As we've been discussing at the recent ABACUS sessions at the Fall Regional Shows, reducing the cost of goods is critical to the profitability of indie bookstores, and these offers help you do exactly that. The ordering periods vary, so don’t miss out.

One of the most generous offers – in discount, ordering period, and ease of use – comes from Baker & Taylor (http://www.bookweb.org/2016-indies-first-publisher-terms). I'd strongly encourage you take advantage of B&T's offering, which starts on November 20th and runs through December 3.

And while you’re at it, please add your Indies First event activity (http://bookweb.org/store-indies-first-activity-registry) to the national map. You can add your information now or just let us know an event is on the schedule and come back and fill in the details later. The stronger our map, the better it is for Indies First, our customers, and our publisher partners.

With sincere thanks,
Oren Teicher, CEO

II. Online Holiday Catalogs are available for your websites.

III. Winter Okra Pick Nominations are open

The deadline to submit is December 1, for books pubbing between January 1, 2017 and March 31, 2017. So all those great books you found at the First 180 Days party at the Discovery Show in Savannah back in September? Now is the time to start nominating them!
