Name: Sarah Pishko
Store and location: Prince Books, 109 E. Main Street, Norfolk, VA 23510
website || facebook
Number of years as a bookseller: 35!
Best part about being a bookseller?: First of all, the product always changes! I stole a line from Books & Books: "NEW YEAR. NEW BOOKS. NEW AUTHORS." Bookstore customers are always "interested and interesting." And, books are always in the news!
What book(s) are you reading?:Varina and Manhattan Beach
Favorite handsell of 2017: News of the World by Paulette Jiles. We all just thought it was a fresh, new story with a unique setting.
Best thing you did this year at your store: Doubled my inventory of greeting cards! Last April, after 3 years of heavy construction right across the street from me, the Hilton Norfolk The Main opened. It's a beautiful hotel with state of the art convention facilities and it's fronted in glass. The registration desk is on the second floor, and as one takes the escalator to the second floor, they have a great view of Prince Books. Most of my greeting cards were in front of the window. A month later, my card inventory was practically wiped out, so I summoned my greeting card rep, Richard Walters, purchased two new barrel-style card displays and greatly increased my card inventory. My greeting card sales have more than doubled since June 2017
Social Media Stats (FB likes, Twitter followers, etc) FB likes 1000
Top priority going into 2018: I have dropped the ball the last few years regarding reporting to ABACUS. I need to get back to it, and then study my financials.
Favorite SIBA programming benefit: Seeing my sales reps, and educational sessions.
What are some ways you work with your community?
Hmm I’m on the board of the DOWNTOWN NORFOLK COUNCIL, and part of it’s VIBRANT SPACES COMMITTEE which was tasked a year ago to develop a marketplace for micro- or incubator retail businesses in a downtown space.I’m on the board of RETAIL ALLIANCE, and am on it’s LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE which monitors legislation that may affect the organization. With regard to legislation, The RETAIL ALLIANCE teamed up the RETAIL MERCHANTS ASSOCIATION, headquartered in Richmond, and formed the VIRGINIA RETAIL FEDERATION that lobbies for both retail organizations.I spent twenty years being a book reviewer for the annual book review contest put on by the FRIENDS OF THE NORFOLK PUBLIC LIBRARY. I have recently stepped in to take the place of an ill reviewer.Every winter I volunteer with my church’s participation in NEST, Norfolk Emergency Shelter Team, a consortium of churches in the city who provide overnight shelter, dinner and breakfast to the homeless who arrive at the church doors.

SIBA presents The Southern Book Prize Long List
(Asheville, NC) The Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance, (SIBA), is pleased to announce the 2018 Southern Book Prize Long List, featuring all the eligible titles that have been nominated for the Southern Book Prize (formerly the SIBA Book Award). Nominated titles must be Southern in nature or by a Southern author (or both!) and have been published in 2017. 100 great Southern books were nominated by Southern Indie booksellers, making the Long
List one of the most comprehensive and exciting reading lists of new Southern literature.
Continuing with established tradition, the Long List prize categories are created by using BISAC categories of the nominees. "The categories work like 'shelves' in our member stores – if there are enough books in a given subject, they deserve a special display" explained SIBA Executive Director Wanda Jewell.
SIBA member booksellers will vote on the Long List over the next few weeks. Finalists for each category in the 2017 Southern Book Prize will be announced April 16, 2018. From there, Finalists will be sent to a jury of booksellers in each category, who will then choose the winning book for their category. Winners will be announced on July 4, "Independents Day."

| Call for 2019 Conroy Legacy Award Nominations! |
Dear SIBA booksellers,
Now is the time to nominate your choice for the 2019 Conroy Legacy Award. This award represents a “Lifetime Achievement”. The Conroy Legacy Award honors the example of beloved author Pat Conroy and recognizes writers who have achieved a lasting impact on their literary community. Recipients have the following attributes:
- Support for independent bookstores, both in their own communities and in general.
- Writing that focuses significantly on their own home place.
- Support of other writers, especially new and emerging authors.
The Conroy Legacy Award is given to one writer in SIBA territory per year. A juried panel of SIBA member booksellers will choose among nominated writers to determine the year’s winner.
Although it is not necessary for a nominated writer to have a new book out in the award year, nominated writers must be living, and must have books in print. Nominations must come from SIBA member bookstores. The Legacy Award provides an opportunity for its member stores to recognize writers who have been important in their community.
Both a donation to the Pat Conroy Literary Center and a donation to a literary entity close to the heart of the writer will be made in the name of the Legacy Award recipient.
Nominations close on April 30th. Nominate your choice today!

We also want to help you pocket some hundreds, as in dollars. Help us recruit new exhibitors to the #SIBA19 Discovery Show, and for every first-time exhibitor that pays full price to exhibit that credits your store with bringing them in, both the bookstore and the exhibitor will receive $100 towards their show expenses. Let your favorite vendors know how much you’d love to see them in Spartanburg in September and make your plans to be there. For every new vendor you recruit, there’s $100 in it for you.
Here's a link to the exhibitor information you can share with your favorite vendors:
Exhibitor Show Package & Registration Form
(Be sure and put the name of your bookstore where indicated on p.3 of the Exhibitor Show Package & Registration Form.)
There is no limit to the number of first-time vendors you can collect $100 each for getting to the #SIBA18 Discovery Show!
Meanwhile, go ahead and get yourself registered as well. Register Now!
Happy Hunting!

MEET THE BOOKSELLER
Serena Wyckoff and Cathy Graham, Copperfish Books, Punta Gorda, FL
Copperfish Books
103 W. Marion Ave., Punta Gorda FL 33950
website || facebook || twitter
Number of years as a bookseller:
12 (5.5 years in our brick-n-mortar store with new/used books, 6.5 years prior as used/antiquarian booksellers – mainly online and in antique malls)
Best part about being a bookseller?:
Constantly being around books and people who love books – stimulating, engaging, and fun! And there's nothing better than when folks come back to say they absolutely loved the books we put into their hands!
What book(s) are you reading?:
Serena is reading The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai after having just finished White Houses by Amy Bloom. Cathy just finished Children of Blood and Bone, and is re-reading Twain and Stanley Enter Paradise (for book club).
Favorite handsell of 2017: A Gentleman in Moscow
Best thing you did this year at your store: Hire our terrific new staff! We were a team of three the first few years… Now We Are Six . ☺
Social Media Stats (FB likes, Twitter followers, etc)
Facebook: 1641 likes
Twitter: 499 followers
Top priority going into 2018: To increase book sales and events during the slower months. We are located in what has traditionally been a seasonal retirement-focused community, with "snowbirds" swelling the local population from October to March. The area is now on the verge of explosive growth, to include more year-round residents and younger working people in the next few years. This offers us the opportunity to strengthen sales April to September, making the overall year more robust.
Favorite SIBA programming benefit: The fall Discovery Show – and we're so excited that it's in Florida this year. We hope to bring our staff for the first time. The show give us a chance to re-connect with our colleagues (booksellers, publishers, authors) and learn about exciting upcoming releases, programs, and industry tips and practices. We always leave re-energized for the busy holiday/winter season!

GREAT NEWS! SIBA is very pleased to announce a new self-guided course for booksellers on the art of using social media and content marketing:
Social Media and Content Marketing Basics for Booksellers: The Art of Increasing Reach and Engagement
with Sarah Benoit and the JB Media Institute.
April 16 - July 16
Sarah was one of the most popular presenters at both Winter Institute in Memphis and EUREKAsiba in Atlanta earlier this year. Not only did she receive enthusiastically positive feedback from attendees, she was pretty consistently mobbed by people with questions throughout the entire day in Atlanta and never once lost her smile or her enthusiasm. You'll note that there are two options for this course -- a "DIY" version for those of you who are comfortable taking online courses on your own, and the "Expert Support" version, which comes with live Q&As and access to "office hours" where you can talk to the instructors in person.
I do encourage you to sign up for the latter, if you can swing it. I am -- I am usually the kind of person that would work her way through an online course on her own. I think I've gone through half of lynda.com that way! But I signed up for the Expert Support option because I want to pick Sarah Benoit's brain. I always have questions! As we all know, nothing beats being able to talk to a real person in real time about your real questions!
Those of you who attended EUREKAsiba already know how helpful and enthusiastic Sarah can be. But if you didn't have a chance to attend, take a few minutes to watch the video of her EUREKAsiba talk.
Social media and content marketing can be stressful and confusing. Many booksellers need to know how to be more efficient and effective so the time and energy they spend marketing online has greater impact and creates results.
Join Sarah Benoit and the JB Media Institute to learn the basic best practices and strategies the professionals use to share stories, build community, and grow your business.
Topics covered include:
- content branding
- keyword research
- content calendars
- Instagram and Facebook tracking
- social media tracking on Google Analytics
- Facebook and Instagram advertising
- event marketing
- and more

THE SITE VISIT (AKA, Nicki goes to VALSPAR)
When Wanda Jewell told me that our annual site visit to the Innisbrook Resort in preparation for upcoming Discovery Show in September would be in March, she did warn me. "It will be during Valspar" she cautioned. I must have looked blank, because she added "the golf tournament." I shrugged and nodded. It was Florida. There would be golf, I thought.
It wasn't until we hit the traffic on US 19 and found ourselves behind a row of coach buses that I realized, oh it's a GOLF TOURNAMENT. I'm not a huge golf fan, but I still immediately called my dad. "Guess where I am!" I gloated. (Read more! || Register for #SIBA18)
So what do we have to look forward to in September?

Well, the place is beautiful.

The exhibit hall is fantastic.

The rooms are really, really comfortable.
USEFUL TIP: CO-HOST YOUR FACEBOOK EVENTS WITH SIBA
Are you creating events on Facebook? SIBA would like to co-host those events with you. When creating the event just choose Authors 'Round the South as your co-host. It's easy and likely to increase not only awareness but attendance at events. This makes it easy for SIBA to share the upcoming event with her 15,000+ Facebook friends and followers. Be sure to tag the author and publisher in your events post. We are at your service.

MEET THE BOOKSELLER
Tony Peltier,
Quail Ridge Books, Raleigh, NC
website || facebook || twitter
How long you've been a bookseller: I've been a bookseller for 16 years. 10 years at Borders and 6 at Quail Ridge.
Best part about being a bookseller: . . .is the books! I get to buy and sell books for a living! And, of course, connecting with people through books.

Books I'm reading:
I just finished Sadness is a White Bird by Moriel Rothman-Zecher. Almost finished The Sea Beast Takes a Lover by Michael Andreasen. In the middle of Frankenstein in Baghdad by Ahmed Saadawi. And just started The Mars Room by Rachel Kushner.
They are all wonderful and completely different from each other.
Favorite handsell of 2017:
Spill Simmer Falter Wither by Sara Baume
So beautiful and beautifully written, devastatingly sad, but in a way that reminds you that you're alive.
Social Media Handles: I'm not on social media. I did Twitter for about 6 months, but made myself delete it.
Best thing we did this year at the store:
I'd have to say, the amazing people we hired this year. We have a wonderful staff, but this year in particular we added some incredible people with great experience in and out of bookselling
Top priority for 2018: Get the word out. Get all these amazing books in people's hands and brains.
And get people to realize that if they don't buy from us, we won't be around forever. Don't take your independent bookstore for granted.
Favorite SIBA programming benefit:
SIBA gave scholarships to two of our staff to go to New Orleans, which they raved about. I'd love to learn more about what SIBA does.
BRILLIANT BOOKSELLER IDEA(S) OF THE WEEK:
Use Your Sidewalk Sign to bring Staff Favorites to the Street!
via Shelf-Awareness
Mystery to Me bookstore, Madison, Wis., added a new twist to its staff recommendations by featuring selections on its sidewalk chalkboard: "New board outside! Ever wonder what your booksellers' favorite books are? Every week we will tell you! This is our first one with Jayne, Joanne and Morgan's favorite books currently! Ask us about them on your next visit!"
